  • Sugar – A staple in sweetening jars and spells. It represents attraction, pleasure, and making life or situations sweeter and fast paced.

  • Honey – Known for its stickiness and long-lasting sweetness. Often used to "bind" someone (Self)/something to kindness, loyalty, or love.

  • Molasses or Syrup – Thicker than honey, used when you want something slow, steady, and deeply rooted.

  • Candy – Great for quick attraction or playful energy. Also used in offerings to spirits, ancestors, and deities who enjoy sweet treats.


Basic Hoodoo Self Love Ritual

Using a red or pink candle in a heat-safe container, gently dress it with olive oil and herbs that align with your intention. Apply a small amount of oil to the candle—just a couple of dabs is enough. Light the candle and recite affirmations, Bible verses, or any words of intention. Watch the candle as it burns, and when it melts down to wax, you can interpret the wax yourself or consult a root worker or wax reader for guidance.

If your ancestors or spirit team enjoy sweets, you can offer their favorites as a gesture. Place the offering on an altar, in a sacred space, or at a crossroads, and remove it after about three days.

Basic Sweetening Jar Ritual

Cleanse an empty jar, write a petition explaining your desire of self-love, inner beauty, healing. Be specific. With a marker, write your whole name across the paper. Fold the paper towards you, to invite the energy to you. Place the paper in the jar, and fill with water. Add sugar (no measurements) Pour until the ancestors say "Stop!" Speak words of intention, shake the jar and place on your altar or in a private area. Shake the jar and speak words of intention daily for 7 days.

  • Be Specific in Your Intentions: Sweetness can draw many kinds of attention. Be specific about what you want.

  • Use the Right Sweetener: Honey can be for long-term bonds or to keep manifestations bonded and steady. Sugar is for quick results; molasses is for strong and steady work.

  • Respect the Tradition: Hoodoo is rooted in Black American culture and survival. Approach with reverence and understanding.
